PHOENIX — A dog has died after being locked in a parked vehicle while the owners were away Monday afternoon in Phoenix.
Phoenix Sgt. Trent Crump said officers responded to a call around 3:30 p.m. at 1703 W. Bethany Home Road where a 1-year-old pit bull mix was inside a locked SUV amid Monday’s scorching weather conditions.
A mall parking lot security guard had alerted police to the situation.
Police said the dog later died of its injuries.
Crump said the owners were detained and released. He did not say if charges are pending.
He said officers are currently investigating the canine’s death as a case of animal cruelty.
