Grand Canyon fire is quarter-mile away from cabin

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. — A lightning-caused fire on the Grand Canyon’s north
rim is a quarter of a mile away from a historic cabin and lookout tower.

Jay Lusher, a fire management officer for Grand Canyon National Park, said
Monday that both structures are considered protected, despite the Galahad Fire’s
closeness to them.

Forest fuels have been cleared from the area, and the cabin has been wrapped
in the type of material used in the fire shelters used by crews fighting

It has burned 3 square miles and there is zero containment.

Crews were focusing Monday on keeping the blaze from crossing a roadway on the
fire’s western end.

Officials aren’t trying to fight the fire’s southern and western flanks, where
the blaze was being used to clear away accumulated forest fuels.
