Arizona high court to consider crime victim issue

PHOENIX — The Arizona Supreme Court has agreed to rule on a legal issue involving rights of a child crime victim and their parents once the child has become an adult.

The case before the state high court involves a man accused of sexually abusing his step-daughter and the invoking by the daughter’s mother of her right under Arizona law to refuse to give a pretrial interview to the defense.

The justices will consider whether parents of minors who were crime victims can continue to refuse to give pretrial interviews to the defense once the victims turn 18 years old.

The state Court of Appeals ruled parents of victims can’t refuse interviews once the victims are 18 but that the parents can withhold information received when the victim was still a minor.
