Tom Horne to defend himself from election complaint

PHOENIX — Attorney General Tom Horne will defend himself against a new
election law complaint without an outside lawyer.

Horne spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said Tuesday that the Republican will
respond to the complaint filed with the Secretary of State and Arizona Citizens
Clean Election Commission by a June 2 deadline.

Grisham says Horne is a good attorney and perfectly capable of defending
himself against what he says are false claims.

The election-law complaint filed by a former staffer alleges Horne’s executive
staff did extensive work on his re-election campaign. The staffer’s lawyer sent
Horne a letter saying he is personally responsible for retaining records because
he no longer has a lawyer.

Attorney Tom Ryan had advised Horne’s previous attorney to retain the records
but Horne lawyer Dennis Wilenchik withdrew as counsel Monday.
