PHOENIX — Three Republican U.S. congressmen from Arizona are calling for the head of
the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care Center to step down after allegations
of gross mismanagement and neglect emerged in recent weeks.
Tuesday’s call from Reps. David Schweikert, Matt Salmon and Trent Franks for
hospital director Sharon Helman and her leadership team to resign comes after
weeks of growing revelations about patient care lapses in Phoenix.
The chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee said up to 40 patients
might have died because of care delays and that the hospital kept a secret list
of patients waiting for appointments to hide delays in care.
The Phoenix VA facility is the latest to come under scrutiny across the nation
because of alleged lapses in patient care.
