Arizona Senate sides with on-demand ridesharing services

PHOENIX — The Arizona Senate gave initial approval to a bill that
would set regulations for ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft.

The initial approval of House Bill 2262 on Tuesday came after weeks of furious
lobbying by the two companies and by taxi firms that oppose the services.

The on-demand ride-sharing services allow members to hail rides with a swipe of
smartphone on sites like Uber and Lyft.

The amended bill exempts rideshare companies from the commercial insurance
requirement that affects traditional taxi, limo and livery companies by not
requiring drivers be insured at all times on the job. It also would not require
rideshare drivers be drug tested.

The Senate must still cast a roll-call vote.
