Man injured while canyoneering in northern Arizona

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A Phoenix man is being treated at a hospital after
falling while canyoneering in northern Arizona.

Coconino County Sheriff’s officials say the 45-year-old man was on a solo
canyoneering trip in Wilbur Canyon.

The sheriff’s office received a report of a beacon alert in the West Clear
Creek area about 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

A state Department of Public Safety Air Rescue helicopter searched the area and
found the man on a steep ridge where he appeared to be stranded on a cliff.

Search and rescue personnel hiked into West Clear Creek and climbed up to the
man on the ridge while another team hiked to an area on the rim above him.

He was airlifted to a hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
His name hasn’t been released.
