BLM seeks comments on transmission project

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Federal land managers are seeking public comments on a plan to build a 360-mile-long transmission line from New Mexico to southern Arizona.

The Bureau of Land Management and the Western Area Power Administration have released a draft report covering the potential environmental effects of the Southline Transmission Line Project.

Project developers said the new line would improve reliability of the electrical grid and help bring more electricity generated with renewable resources such as wind and solar to markets throughout the region.

The line would cross federal and state land as well as private property.

The comment period will end July 10. Several public meetings are planned next month in New Mexico and Arizona.
