If your goal for 2016 is to get into a size smaller pair of jeans, you’ve probably wished a time or two that you could have a home gym.
Here’s ways to create one without spending too much:
- Plan to use the space available. You only need a 10-by-10 or 10-by-12 area like a spare bedroom, a villa or supersize master bath. A garage is possible, but you might have to install a ductless mini-split air conditioner for about $2,000 or so for summer use.
- You can install a floating rubber floor as is seen in commercial gyms so that equipment won’t wear through tile or hardwood. Buy flooring in squares so that you can replace worn areas easily.
- You probably will spend a bit more than $1,000 each for a good quality stair-climber, treadmill or elliptical machine, but it’s easy to spend thousands more. Find deals on previously-owned machines at used sporting goods stores.
- A minimum redo, including flooring, two machines and repainting, might cost about $4,000 if it’s a do-it-yourself project.
- On a really tight budget? Buy some resistance bands and medicine balls for $100 or so. Also possible is the Total Gym equipment that costs about $1,000 or more. Fold it up and store it in a closet after your workout.
