Bald eagle closure area at Arizona lake to reopen

PHOENIX — An area of Lake Pleasant that had been closed to help bald
eagles during the breeding season reopens Tuesday.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department said bald eagles there have failed to
produce young and are unlikely to breed this spring. The lake is about 40 miles
northwest of Phoenix.

The department implemented annual closures at lakes and rivers statewide to
protect bald eagle nesting sites. State officials say human disturbance of
nesting areas can cause eagles to leave their eggs uncovered or cause eaglets to
try to fly too early and fall out of the nest.

Most other closures remain in effect because bald eagle breeding activities
still are continuing in those areas.
