No suspenders: Annual Phoenix No Pants Light Rail Ride this weekend

Jan 7, 2016, 3:29 PM

PHOENIX — If you’re on the light rail this weekend in Phoenix and notice some people — a lot of them — not wearing pants, there’s no need to be alarmed.

A local improvisational comedy group is holding the city’s eighth annual No Pants Light Rail Ride on Sunday. Thirty-three other cities around the world are holding similar events on the same day.

The event, led by AZ Improv, runs from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday. Participants are asked to board the trains at one of four stops:

  • 19th and Montebello avenues
  • Sycamore and Main Street
  • Veterans Way and College Avenue
  • 44th and Washington streets

They are then supposed to ride the train to the Central Avenue and Roosevelt Street stop, where they will get off the light rail and walk to Angels Trumpet House for a party. After the party, all of the participants will jump back on the light rail and head home.

While the event does ask for everyone to be dressed normally — aside from wearing pants — organizers are reminding people they can be punished for showing a little too much skin. Thong and g-string underwear is not allowed and people should consider wearing other clothing under loose-fitting underwear.

Anyone who takes part is also asked to pretend like everything is normal and tell no one they are participating in a prank, but merely give a simple explanation when asked why they’re not wearing pants. Improv AZ suggested “I forgot them” or “I got hot.”

Also, just so the group can estimate how many people to expect, interested participants are asked to RSVP via Facebook.

Just a word to the wise: A large party is being held in downtown Phoenix over the weekend, so it’s a good idea to plan for some extra patience instead of pants.

Also, the National Weather Service is calling for a high of 56 degrees with a slight chance of rain. Might we recommend an under, erm, umbrella?

We want to hear from you.
