PHOENIX — Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego has resigned from the Arizona
House to focus on his run for Congress representing Arizona’s 7th District.
Gallego’s last day was Thursday, but he formally resigned Friday.
Meanwhile, Democratic state Sen. Steve Gallardo has been in Washington all week
preparing to launch his bid for the 7th District seat being vacated by longtime
U.S. Rep. Ed Pastor.
Gallardo initially said he planned to remain in the Senate, but he tells The
Associated Press he is now considering resigning to focus on the campaign.
Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox is also planning for a run in
August’s Democratic primary. She’s also said she plans to resign.
Pastor’s Phoenix-area district is heavily Democratic and whoever wins the
August primary is expected to easily win November’s general election.
