Arizona inmate sentenced for threatening letter

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A 35-year-old Arizona inmate has been sentenced to four years in prison for sending a threatening letter targeting a New Mexico judge, a former sheriff, and a Drug Enforcement Administration agent.

Christopher John Chavira was sentenced earlier this month following a plea agreement in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque.

According to the plea agreement, Chavira sent a letter in January 2013 threatening to kill the DEA agent, the New Mexico state judge and former Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White. He admitted in the plea agreement that he sent the letter from an Arizona prison.

Chavira is serving a prison term in Florence, Ariz., for attempted murder.
