Phoenix man pleads not guilty in death of neighbor

PHOENIX — A Phoenix man has pleaded not guilty after being rearrested in the fatal shooting of a neighbor last fall.

Court documents said Nicholas Philip Oakes was jailed in lieu of $1 million bond
on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated harassment.

Oakes pleaded not guilty on Monday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

He initially was arrested immediately after the Sept. 6 shooting of neighbor
Terry Maynard, after alleged harassment of Maynard and another neighbor by Oakes.

A judge had ruled in January that Oakes was incompetent to stand trial and was
a danger to himself and others.

The judge also ordered that Oakes be confined at a behavioral health facility.
He was re-arrested there Feb. 4.
