PHOENIX — A Phoenix-based group has been awarded state funding to identify
environmental contaminants at a downtown property where it’s planning an
affordable housing project.
The money from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality goes to Chicanos
Por La Causa.
The group has partnered with Urban Sol Development company to build 520
residences on the 14-acre parcel near Fourth Avenue and Lincoln Street. The master development plan also calls for
commercial and retail space.
The $11,500 Brownfield grant will go toward an environmental assessment on the property to
identify contaminants and cleanup costs.
The money comes from a fund for property that has the potential for development
but that could be contaminated.
The department described a Brownfield as an “abandoned or under-used property with an active redevelopment potential that suffers from known or perceived environmental contamination.”
