PHOENIX — The funeral for slain Phoenix police officer John Hobbs has been set for Monday at 10 a.m. at Christ’s Church of the Valley in Peoria.

Hobbs and his partner AJ Casados were shot on Monday while attempting to serve a warrant in west Phoenix. They were conducting surveillance and were spotted
by the suspect who attempted to flee and wrecked his car before engaging in a
shootout with the officers near a busy Phoenix intersection.

Police said neither detective was wearing a bullet proof vest at the time of
the shooting.

The suspect, 28-year-old William Thornton, was declared dead at the scene.

Hobbs was a 21-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department and a member of the Major Offenders Bureau for seven years.

Casados, 44, was released from St. Joseph’s Hospital on Wednesday. He is a nine-year veteran of the force.

Hobbs is survived by his wife and three young children.

A memorial account has been established to help Hobbs’ family. Donations can be made at any National Bank of Arizona location by mentioning Hobbs’ name. All proceeds go to the family.

A BBQ to benefit the families of Hobbs and Casados is Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. at the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association garage, 1102 West Adams in Phoenix.

100 percent of the donations at the event will be donated to the families.
