Tucson Electric parent staves off bankruptcy hoax

TUCSON, Ariz. — The parent company of Tucson Electric Power was the target
of a bankruptcy hoax.

The Arizona Daily Star reports a fraudulent Chapter 7
bankruptcy petition was filed Jan. 21 in UNS Energy Corp.’s name in U.S.
Bankruptcy Court in Tucson with forged signatures of company executives.

The newspaper says a similar filing was made Feb. 6 in the name of “Tucson
Energy Power Corporation” with TEP and other UNS units named as affiliates.

Court records show the initial case was dismissed Jan. 29 and the second case
was dismissed a week later after UNS attorneys submitted affidavits saying the
filings were fraudulent.

It’s unclear who submitted the petitions and federal authorities have been

UNS Energy is in the process of being acquired by Canada-based utility operator
Fortis Inc.
