Arizona House to debate abortion bill

PHOENIX — The Arizona House will debate a bill allowing surprise
inspections at abortion clinics that is being pushed by an anti-abortion group.

Legislators will debate House Bill 2284 by Republican Rep. Debbie Lesko of
Peoria on Thursday. Lesko said abortion clinics are the only medical facilities in
Arizona that required warrants for inspections by state regulators.

The bill backed by the Center for Arizona Policy eliminates a requirement that
the Department of Health Services obtain an administrative warrant to conduct
unscheduled inspections in Arizona’s nine licensed abortion clinics.

Democrats and Planned Parenthood opposed the bill. They said federal courts have
ruled that snap inspections at the state’s abortion clinics are not legal. Women’s privacy rights are particularly at risk and warn of huge legal
costs if the bill passes, they said.
