PHOENIX — A young woman who has become the face of Dreamers, Erika Andiola, was arrested early Wednesday morning by Phoenix police while showing support for a hunger strike.
BuzzFeed reported Andiola was there in support of a small group of people on a hunger strike in front of Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices in central Phoenix when she was arrested.
“I’d gone to get food and when I got back police had shut down the street,” said another Dreamer, Jose Patino. “There were SUVs around us and Erika was arrested.”
Caros Garcia, executive director of the Puente Movement was also arrested along with a woman named Rachel.
Andiola has appeared on national television and was the cover for TIME magazine in 2012.
The hunger strike had been calling for the release of loved ones detained in a ICE facility in Eloy along with a plea to the federal government to stop all deportations.
Earlier this week, an unknown person threw a burrito with hateful messages written on it at the hunger strikers.
