Arizona agency needs helping hands for ferret-recovery project

SELIGMAN, Ariz. — Wildlife officials are soliciting volunteers to help in
a recovery project in northern Arizona for the black-footed ferret.

Arizona Game and Fish Department has announced that it is seeking
volunteers to help document ferret populations for three days in March at a
ferret recovery area in Aubrey Valley, just west of Seligman.

The black-footed ferret was twice thought extinct until a population of 18 was
discovered in 1981.

Aubrey Valley was chosen as a reintroduction site in 1996.

Officials said the ferrets have reached a high enough population now to be seen
as self-sustaining.
