Arizona cities to ring in 2018 with unique boot, pine cone, card drops
PHOENIX — Arizonans who see a giant illuminated boot, pine cone or deuce of clubs dropping from the sky on New Year’s Eve could be perfectly sober.
Three Arizona cities — Prescott, Flagstaff and Show Low — will be celebrating the new year with their own unique traditions: Dropping a cowboy boot, pine cone or deuce of clubs playing card in place of the traditional ball.
Prescott plans to welcome the new year by dropping a 6-foot illuminated cowboy boot.
“We kind of celebrate the Western heritage of Prescott … being the cowboy capitol of the west,” Matt Brassard with M&M Entertainment and Productions, the group organizing the event, said.
The boot drop will be at the city’s Historic Whiskey Row. The boot will be slowly lowered from a 40-foot flagpole on top of the Palace Building.
It will drop twice: Once at 10 p.m. and once at midnight. During the second drop, fireworks will ignite from the top of the parking garage behind Whiskey Row.
Meanwhile, north of Prescott, the city of Flagstaff will drop a unique item of its own from the historic Weatherford Hotel in downtown: a pine cone.
“We came up with the pine cone at a managers meeting one day,” owner Sam Green said. “So I built a pine cone out of a garbage can and wrapped it in pine cones and lights.”
Like its boot counterpart, the pine cone will also be lowered at 10 p.m. and midnight.
The earlier drops coincide with the traditional ball drop in New York City’s Times Square.
In eastern Arizona, an illuminated two of clubs playing card will be dropped in honor of Show Low’s history, in which two ranchers settled a land dispute during a marathon poker game.
