Phoenix police release name of man shot, killed near state fairgrounds

PHOENIX — Authorities have released the name of a man fatally shot by
Phoenix police after officers said he swung a samurai sword at them.

The man was identified as 21-year-old Jose Manuel Meza Avendano.

Avendano was shot Feb. 13 after officers encountered him while checking out a
suspicious vehicle south of the state fairgrounds. They said the car was parked
on the side of a road with its hood raised.

Officers checked the vehicle’s license plate and found it was fictitious and
approached the car.

Police said Avendano initially refused to get out of the vehicle, then exited
carrying a sheathed sword.

They said he removed the sword from the sheath and swung it at officers, who Tasered, then shot him after he remained upright. Avendano died at the scene.
