US, Arizona district agree on English learning steps

GANADO, Ariz. — The U.S. Justice Department reached an agreement with
a northeastern Arizona school district on improvements on the district’s
instruction of Navajo students learning the English language.

The department said the agreement with Ganado Unified School District will
ensure that students have equal opportunities to participate in the district’s
educational programs.

The district is located on the Navajo Reservation.

According to the department, requirements of the agreement included properly
identifying English-learning students when they enroll in school and providing
information to parents in languages they understand.

Other provisions dealt with training for district employees, instruction
material and monitoring of students who opt out or leave English Language
Learning programs.

The agreement said it’s an attempt to avoid litigation.
