PHOENIX — A man who pleaded guilty to setting fire to a Maricopa County
Sheriff’s Office SUV and two other county vehicles has been sentenced to two
years in prison.
Maricopa County prosecutors say 25-year-old Gustavo Hernandez also was
sentenced Friday to three years of supervised probation and received a
three-month deferred jail term.
He pleaded guilty to arson and criminal damage in the case last November.
Sheriff’s deputies reporting to work one morning in September 2013 heard car
alarms and saw the fire in the secured parking lot of the Maricopa County
maintenance yard in Mesa.
They later found Hernandez near the scene. He was arrested and later confessed
to using flares to start the fire.
Deputies say at least five additional flares were found scattered throughout
