Nearly 30 more prison years for man in Ariz. crimes

TUCSON, Ariz. — A man acquitted in the shooting of a Tucson police officer
has been sentenced to nearly 30 more years in prison for other crimes.

Richard Mendoza was convicted last month on two counts of burglary and six
counts of possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited possessor.

He was sentenced Thursday to 12 years for the weapons charges and 17 3/4 years
for the burglary charges.

The Arizona Daily Star reports Mendoza already was
sentenced to 11 years in prison for parole violations, which will be served
consecutively to his new convictions.

A jury found Mendoza not guilty on two counts of aggravated assault with a
deadly weapon in the November 2012 shooting of Tucson police Officer Robert

Carpenter survived and returned to work nearly a year later.
