Phoenix city, school officials try to soothe parents after campus shooting

PHOENIX — Phoenix city and school officials are trying to allay parents’
concerns in the wake of recent gunfire outside a high school.

Nobody was injured in the Jan. 30 shooting outside Laveen’s Cesar Chavez High School at 39th Avenue and Baseline Road
during a basketball game.

Police said their investigation continues but that they suspect the gunfire was
related to rival gang members who had a chance encounter.

Tightened security procedures put into place at the school since the shooting
include weapons checks of people visiting the campus for sports contests or
other public events.

The city has announced it will give the district with money to hire additional
school resource officers.

School officials said there was talk of social media posts about possible
upcoming trouble at the school but that hasn’t been documented.
