Top 10 reasons we’re lucky to be in Arizona at Christmastime
Dec 23, 2015, 9:19 AM
We sure are lucky to live in such a great state this time of year. And for that reason, we’ve compiled a list of our top 10 reasons we consider ourselves lucky to be in Arizona during Christmastime.
We hope you enjoy this list!
No. 10: Outdoor entertainment
You can enjoy unique outdoor night-time entertainment for the holidays like ZooLights, the fabulous annual festival of lights and ice sculpture held at the Phoenix Zoo, open evenings through Jan. 10. Hopefully, you will also experience the candlelight extravaganza held through December at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, during Las Noches de las Luminarias.
No. 9: Mittens are optional
You’ve looked everywhere but you can’t find much in the way of mittens or snow boots in local stores. Actually, they do carry overcoats, but you probably don’t need to buy them if you’re not paying a visit to Wisconsin soon.
No. 8: Evenings on ice
If you’re really anxious to remember what winter is supposed to be all about, you can visit the skating rink on Central Avenue in Phoenix where they hold CitySkate, including a light show, and a nightly snowfall. Through Jan. 11 in the evenings.
No. 7: Winter pool parties
If you’re willing to pay the power bill, you can heat up your swimming pool and have someone shoot a photo of you swimming laps. Put the photo on the Christmas card you’re sending to your ex-girlfirend in Minneapolis with the message “Merry Christmas! Wish you were here!”
No. 6: The weather isn’t frightful
You can gather with friends and family around the fire pit in your backyard and toast marshmallows, drink hot cocoa, look at the stars and talk about why the weather outside is not frightful.
No. 5: Great Christmas pageants
You can get free tickets to any number of megachurch pageants held over the holidays that feature live donkeys and camels; maybe an elephant, dancers, and massive orchestras.
No. 4: Our own Wonder of the World
You’re less than a day’s drive from a site acclaimed all over the Internet as one of the seven greatest wonders of the natural world, the Grand Canyon. Some of the others? Mount Everest ranks first and Victoria Falls second. The canyon is third on the list and it’s great to visit in winter, too. (Just in case, rent chains for your tires before you go.)
No. 3 Festivals and even more festivals
If you’re sticking around for a while, you will soon experience the ultimate in Arizona winter and spring festivities and amusements including the Waste Management Phoenix Open golf tournament at the TPC in Scottsdale, the Arabian Horse Show, the Barrett-Jackson car auction, the Fiesta Bowl, and to cap it all off, Cactus League spring training.
No. 2: Retire the snow shovel
You don’t have to spend $500 to $1,000 on a snow blower every couple of years or worry too much about keeping up your anti-freeze.
No. 1: Blizzard-free parking
You won’t have to park your car in the middle of a blizzard on a freeway and have to come back a day later to try to find it.
From all of us at Rosie on the House, to all of you, we wish you a very merry Christmas and happy holiday season.
Tune in to KTAR every Saturday morning from 7-11 a.m. for the Rosie on the House broadcast!
