Double-homicide suspect in Tucson appears in court

TUCSON, Ariz. — A man accused in a hit-and-run double homicide in Tucson
has made his initial court appearance.

Pima County prosecutors say 28-year-old Michael Dwayne Leday is being held on
suspicion of two counts of first-degree murder in the New Year’s Day incident.

He fled Tucson and was arrested Jan. 14 in Missouri after federal investigators
tracked him to a Kansas City hotel.

Leday was extradited to Tucson and appeared in court Wednesday. Prosecutors say
formal charges should be filed soon.

Leday was wanted in the deaths of 32-year-old Patrick Balbastro and 46-year-old
Cindy Burnett.

He’s also accused of critically injuring Balbastro’s girlfriend.

Tucson police say Balbastro saw Burnett being assaulted and stopped to help.
They say Leday got into Balbastro’s vehicle and allegedly ran over him, his
girlfriend and Burnett.
