New security measures at a South Phoenix school

PHOENIX — New security measures are in place at a South Phoenix high
school after shots were fired outside a gymnasium during a basketball game last
week.

Cesar Chavez High officials added extra security guards at athletic events and
school activities Monday.

At Monday night’s basketball game at the school, security guards plus a Phoenix
police officer stood at the main gate and used a metal detector to check
everyone going inside.

KTVK-TV reports another set of officers ran a second
sweep just outside of the gym area.

School officials say the increased security will remain in place through the
rest of the basketball season. They are evaluating which security measures to
have in place for the spring sports season.

Nobody was hurt last Friday night when gang members fired shots.
