GILBERT, Ariz. — In an attempt to reduce cost and travel time to a Phoenix facility, Gilbert police are considering partnering with
Chandler to build and operate a jail in Gilbert.
Gilbert Police Cmdr. Pete Smith said the move could save the town up to $70,000
If the partnership moves forward, Gilbert and Chandler would split an estimated
$300,000 construction cost.
The first-year cost to Gilbert would be about $340,000 for construction,
personnel and operations.
It would likely take two to three years to recoup the construction cost with
money saved while no longer paying booking fees to Maricopa County.
