Valley firefighters receive hazmat training

PHOENIX — Valley firefighters spent Monday morning training and sharpening their skills in preparation for the next hazmat call they are dispatched to.

“They’re low-frequency but high-hazard,” said Phoenix Fire Cpt. Darrel Wiseman of the calls.

The Hazardous Materials Team responds to a wide variety of incidents, which include potentially deadly emergencies like chemical fires, leaks, spills, explosions and weapons of mass destruction.

The hazards involve may include toxicity, flammability, radiological exposure, explosives or a combination of the aforementioned.

The training took place at the Union Pacific Rail Yard in Phoenix, where firefighters tackled a significant chemical spill on Jan. 3, when a tanker was leaking flammable ethanol alcohol.
