TUCSON, Ariz. — A Mexican man charged with smuggling people into Arizona
has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for a rollover accident that
killed five passengers.
Federal prosecutors said Thursday that Armando Ivan Palomares-Castro must serve
five years of supervised release after his prison term.
Palomares-Castro pleaded guilty in June to transportation of illegal immigrants
for profit resulting in death.
Authorities say Palomares-Castro was driving a pickup truck that failed to
yield to U.S. Border Patrol units southeast of Tucson last April 20.
Five passengers who were in the country illegally were killed in the crash and
16 others were injured.
Survivors told investigators that Palomares-Castro was their guide when the
group crossed by foot into southern Arizona.
Another guide was sentenced last October to nine years in federal prison.
