Suspect charged in attack on Park Service employee

BISBEE, Ariz. — A man already in federal custody has been indicted in the
attack on a National Park Service employee in Bisbee last year.

Cochise County authorities say a grand jury on Thursday indicted 33-year-old
Gil Gaxiola on charges of attempted first- and second-degree murder, armed
robbery, aggravated assault, kidnapping and theft of means of transportation.

Authorities say Karen Gonzales was found unconscious from head trauma in a
picnic area restroom at Chiricahua National Monument on Aug. 28.

Her government vehicle was found hours later about 40 miles away in Douglas by
tracking her cellphone, which was still inside.

Gonzales is a uniformed maintenance worker with the Park Service and a longtime
seasonal employee.

The recovered vehicle was processed by the FBI for evidence, which authorities
say linked Gaxiola to the case.
