Report: Phoenix among top 30 cities for bed bugs

Jan 17, 2014, 1:00 PM | Updated: 1:00 pm

PHOENIX — The Valley is among the top 30 places to be bitten by a bed bug, according to a new report.

According to a report from pest control company Orkin published on MarketWatch.com, Phoenix had the 28th highest number of bed bug treatments in 2013, up seven spots from 2012.

“While studies show that bed bugs do not spread disease, the physical and mental health consequences are well documented and of serious public concern,” said Orkin entomologist and Technical Services Director Ron Harrison, Ph.D. “Once bed bugs are inside your home or business, they can reproduce quickly and can travel from place to place in personal belongings and even on people. They can also move from place to place on their own, independently of objects.”

Overall, the city with the most bed bug treatments was Chicago, followed by Los Angeles, Columbus, Ohio, Detroit and Cincinnati, respectively.
