Report: Arizona Apple plant to focus on iPhone, iPod

PHOENIX — The Apple plant being built in Mesa, Ariz. will reportedly focus on creating the specialized glass used on the company’s iPhone and iPod products.

According to MacRumors.com, Apple posted three job openings Tuesday that were associated with GT Advanced Technologies, the company that produces the glass, known as Sapphire.

Sapphire is currently used to protect the cameras on several recent iPhone models, as well as the Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the iPhone 5s, with the material’s high durability and resistance to scratching making it a key component for those applications.

The report also said the openings could betray interest from Apple to increase the number of products that utilize Sapphire, such as the rumored iWatch, though nothing is confirmed.
