Man accused in 2011 death backs out of plea deal

KINGMAN, Ariz. — A Kingman man accused of fatally running over his stepdaughter’s boyfriend more than two years ago has backed out a plea offer that would have resolved the criminal case against him.

Michael Anthony Rivera is accused of striking 23-year-old Nickolaus Gerenscer with a car and then trying to hit Gerenscer’s father and brother with the vehicle during the November 2011 incident.

The Kingman Daily Miner reports ( that Rivera on Friday backed out of a plea agreement that would have resulted in a 20-year prison sentence.

No reason was given in court for Rivera declining the plea offer.

Gerenscer’s mother, Renee Ceniceros, says her family is pleased Rivera backed out of the agreement.

She says the family believes he’ll get more time in prison if a jury finds him guilty.
