New ‘Independence Day’ trailer prepares fans for life after Will Smith

Dec 14, 2015, 5:14 PM

As you may (or may not) know, the trailer for the sequel to the 1996 classic “Independence Day” has finally graced our screens, but prepare yourself: Will Smith is no where to be seen.

Although it was announced earlier this year that the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air would not be returning for the “Independence Day: Resurgence” film, we finally get to imagine what the film could be like without him.

Spoiler alert: It still looks really freakin’ cool.

“Independence Day: Resurgence” takes place decades after the first film, demonstrating how the international community has built up the Earth’s defenses after the alien attack using “technology salvaged from remains of the alien forces.”

But, of course, no action movie has a simple premise: The aliens were able to send out a distress signal before their defeat, so a new wave of alien ships has begun to terrorize Earth.

Alongside the premiere of the trailer, officials with the film launched Warof1996.com, an interactive website detailing the world “events” that have happened since the original alien attacks.

Hopefully we’ve given you plenty to catch up on and a large amount of time to watch the first film: “Independence Day: Resurgence” isn’t scheduled to hit theaters until June 24, 2016.
