Between an endless amount of parties, countless number of gifts and a continuous loop of Christmas carols, single mother of two Monica Romero sure knows how busy the holiday season can get. Add pursuing a college degree in the mix and the 31 days of December can easily feel like 31 days of exhaustion.
Romero, an Army ROTC student at the University of Louisville, arranged for a babysitter to watch her two children, Marcus and Mikayla, for the night while she took a final exam for her military history class on Dec. 2, according to Buzzfeed News.
After the babysitter cancelled last minute, Romero said she was unsure of what to do with her kids while she took the exam. Romero’s friend, Stephanie Henry, suggested she take the kids with and let them play in the hall.
“I felt anxiety about it because I knew they weren’t going to sit still,” Romero said in an interview with Buzzfeed News.
According to the article, Romero stepped out into the hall when Marcus started to get her attention and was followed out by her professor, Dr. Daniel Krebs.
Instead of reprimanding her like she initially thought, Krebs did the unheard of: Stayed with Romero’s children so she could finish her exam.
In a Facebook post, Henry said Krebs went into the hallway to play with and keep the kids occupied while Romero took the final.
“Such a kind and caring act committed when the reaction could have been the complete opposite,” the post read. “My heart is warm tonight. ‘Tis the season.”
Romero said she thought the act was “amazing” because Krebs genuinely cared about her exam.
“He’s a really great teacher and it was just a genuine act of kindness,” she said in an interview with Buzzfeed News. “I’m just really grateful for it.”
