Christmas isn’t the typical scene in Arizona. There’s no real snow here in the Valley and temperatures are usually warm and balmy. While some people adopt traditions like baking cookies, sports fans have their own traditions. Basketball fans watch the Chicago Bulls or LA Lakers play on Christmas Day. This year, the San Diego Chargers will be playing the Oakland Raiders on Christmas Eve.
It’s truly ‘The most wonderful time of the year’ for sports fans everywhere. You may have a few non-sports fans visiting, though, so having CenturyLink’s PrismTV becomes a gift for everyone. The Whole Home DVR option allows you to watch and record several shows at once so everyone can have their Christmas cookies and eat them too.
Here is a list of six winter sports movies that will keep you in the holiday mood.
Cool Runnings – (PG)
Cool Runnings is one of the most popular Olympics movies of the past few decades.
The movie is about one Jamaican man’s attempt to get himself and his three teammates onto the Winter Olympic stage as a bobsled team after failing to qualify for the Summer Olympics in the 100 meters.
This movie is such a fun, feel-good movie, it can put anyone into a ‘jolly’ state of mind.
Miracle – (PG)
Disney has put on film a movie that embodies America and the holiday season: an Olympic ice hockey match against the Soviet Union. And not only is it a winter sports movie, but it’s also a winter sports movie that includes some Christmas scenes in it. On top of the temperature, coach Herb Brooks adds his cold heart to the mix, leaving you with a chilly outcome.
Everyone knows how the USSR vs. USA game ends, but it’s the snow, ice and cold that make it fun to watch during the holidays.
Rocky IV – (PG)
The fourth installment of the Rocky franchise takes place in snow-covered Russia where the Italian Stallion faces Ivan Drago in a revenge match.
Not only does this film have a great music soundtrack, it’s also the first time Rocky goes up against someone who can break him.
The ice-cold training Rocky undergoes while in Russia will surely make you feel much cooler, just by watching.
Ice Princess- (G)
Many young girls dream about gliding around on the ice. The Ice Princess is about a young girl named Casey, whose dream is to compete as a figure skater in the Winter Olympics.
The winter cold and snow are both included in this movie, and there’s a romance between Casey and the Zamboni driver that heats things up on the ice.
D2: The Mighty Ducks- (PG)
“The Mighty Ducks” is about as close as you can get to “The Sandlot” in sports-movie greatness. It gives a good look into the lives of typical teenage boys, and the hockey scenes are great.
The next time you’re watching a Coyotes game, you’ll be screaming “Hit a knuckle puck!” at the top of your lungs.
Iron Will – (PG)
Let’s not forget the pups in the house. You might not consider dog sledding a sport, but don’t tell that to your dog. This movie is about Will Stoneman, a young man who enters a sled dog race to provide for his now-widowed mother.
The weather is cold, the snow is plenty and the dogs are amazing. What more does a winter sports movie need?
Make sure everyone gets exactly what they wish. Take advantage of the convenience and flexibility of CenturyLink’s Prism TV to enjoy winter sports movies with your family this holiday season.
