Police warn about dangers of celebratory gunfire

PHOENIX — As New Year’s Eve approaches, Phoenix police officers plan to hand out fliers outside a west Phoenix store Thursday to warn people about the dangers of celebratory gunfire.

This will mark the 11th year that the agency has led a campaign to curb random gunfire.

Officers, community groups and others have gone door to door in the past to inform people about the problem.

The effort began after the June 1999 death of 14-year-old Phoenix resident Shannon Smith.

Smith was killed after being struck by a stray bullet while in her backyard.

Her death galvanized the community and resulted in statewide passage of “Shannon’s Law” which made firing a weapon into the air a felony.
