PHOENIX — A shoplifting suspect was arrested Thursday morning after throwing a bicycle at a security guard and a chase on foot through Mesa yards.
Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato said the guard, an off-duty Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deputy, confronted the suspect at a store in the Mesa Riverview shopping center. The man heaved a bike at the guard, who called police for backup.
Mesa police arrived and chased the man into a nearby neighborhood, where he was taken into custody.
The deputy was taken to the hospital with a knee injury. The suspect will be charged with aggravated assault of an officer in addition to shoplifting.
