Maricopa man sentenced in officer assault charges

FLORENCE, Ariz. — A Maricopa man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison
after pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated assault on Arizona law
enforcement officers.

Pinal County Sheriff’s officials say 30-year-old Joseph Burns was sentenced to
two concurrent 12-year terms.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say officers responded to a
report of an armed man in stolen truck in Mesa on March 14.

The driver of the truck sped off and drove into Pinal County as it was chased
by sheriff’s deputies and Apache Junction police.

Authorities say the truck stopped in San Tan Valley and the driver rammed two
law enforcement’s vehicles.

Officers then shot and wounded the driver, who was later identified as Burns.

Burns faced up to 13-year prison sentences on each aggravated assault count.
