Arizona officials order closure of 3 charter schools

PHOENIX — The Arizona State Board for Charter Schools has ordered three
charter schools that earned failing ratings on state assessment tests to close.

The Arizona Charter Schools Association said the move showed the state is
carefully monitoring charters, which are essentially public schools that receive
state funding but are run by private entities.

The charter schools board issued notices to revoke the contracts of Omega
Schools, Inc., Founding Fathers Academies, Inc., and Kin Dah Lichi’i Olta’ on
Monday. The actions were taken after students at the schools failed statewide
assessment tests three years in a row.

Omega Schools is based in Glendale, Founding Fathers in Show Low, and Kin Dah Lichi’i Olta’ in Ganado.

The Arizona Department of Education issued F grades to 11 schools this year,
five of which were charters. Two of the five charters have closed.
