PHOENIX — The city of Peoria began accepting worn out American flags Monday as part of a new recycling program.
In a press release, the city said the old flags will cover the caskets of veterans who are to be cremated. The program will ensure both the veteran and the flag are properly honored.
Residents who want to drop off a flag can do so at any Peoria Fire Department station. Drop boxes will be outside of each station’s lobby from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The city will also accept donations for its “Christmas for the Troops” program. This year, the Peoria Sunset Lions Club Foundation has requested toiletries to include in care packages that will be sent overseas.
