PHOENIX — A Valley family received a home renovation in time for the holidays after neighbors nominated them to receive the repairs.
“When they came and they said that I won something, I couldn’t believe it,” homeowner Marianna Ramirez said. “I can’t believe it … I feel so blessed.”
Ramirez was selected through the Nominate Your Neighbor program put on by The District Phoenix, a local restoration and real estate company.
“Find a neighbor that is doing their best and somebody who could just use a little bit of help,” company spokesman Andy Griffin said.
Griffin said his company wants to do good but is on a limited budget.
“We have a budget so the house matters, and the story matters,” he said.
Griffin said Ramirez’s story “resonated” with him. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago and she lost her nephew to leukemia a couple years later. She quit her job to help care for her mother.
“This year, [someone] broke in, and they stole everything from the house,” Ramirez said. “All the electronics, jewelry, money.”
“It’s very hard, but we survive,” she continued.
Griffin felt that Ramirez was most in need of the prize.
“We decided, with the budget we had, an exterior restoration would be the most bang for your buck,” he said. “The grout had kind of been deteriorated, so we repointed the grout. We’re going to paint the exterior. All the windows in the house — this house is 80-90 years old — they’ve been painted shut. Not one of them worked.”
Ramirez said she feels blessed to have been chosen. She has lived in the house for 30 years.
“I want to say to these people, thank you much. And God bless everybody.”
The restoration is expected to be completed next week.
