Ariz. tribe among 9 planning clean energy projects

PHOENIX — The U.S. Energy Department says nine tribal clean energy projects will receive more than $7 million and one of the projects is in Arizona.

Highlighted during this year’s White House Tribal Nations Conference, the awards will help American Indian and Alaska Native tribes deploy clean energy projects.

Energy officials say the projects will save the communities money, enhance their energy security and create new job and business opportunities.

In Payson, the Tonto Apache tribe plans to install solar arrays on three of its largest energy consuming buildings.

It’ll help the tribe meet more than 60 percent of the buildings’ total electricity needs.

A recent Energy Department study shows American Indian land comprises 2 percent of the U.S. land but contains an estimated 5 percent of all U.S. renewable energy resources.
