PHOENIX — Whatever he was thinking, a man accused of stealing a car near Phoenix has to be regretting his choices Tuesday, after winding up in a chase with authorities, getting arrested and nearly being fire fodder when the vehicle burst into flames.

The chase began in a neighborhood in the San Tan Valley, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said, and ended up near Mesa Gateway Airport.

The suspect, Christian Cook, drove the car onto a dirt lot, where the car became stuck. He took off on foot but was caught by Pinal and Maricopa County deputies.

The car burst into flames shortly thereafter.

PCSO spokesman Mark Clark said friction created by the spinning wheels set brush under the car on fire.

Clark said Cook likely will face charges in both counties.

Cook was arrested earlier this year in connection with copycatting the Interstate 10 shootings. An alleged accomplice to authorities that Cook and another person used a wrist rocket sling shot to propel a 1/2 to 3/4 inch crushed granite landscaping rock at approximately 10 pedestrians and four vehicles.
