Hopi High wins Arizona cross-country championships

PHOENIX — The boys’ cross-country team at Hopi High School has earned its 24th state title in a row, and the girls have marked their seventh consecutive win and 22nd overall.

No high school in the nation is as dominant when it comes to winning consecutive championships, and the teams wanted to make sure the streak continued at Saturday’s state cross-country championships in Phoenix.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association said the boys scored 69 points to beat out Pinon for the Division IV title. The girls passed Pusch Ridge and Scottsdale Prep for their team title.

Running is deeply rooted in the northern Arizona tribe’s tradition as a way to carry messages and bless the reservation with rain. Tribal members regularly challenge each other to footraces, and running is prominent in ceremonies.
