UA Medical Center lung transplant program on hiatus

TUCSON, Ariz. — The lung transplant program at the University of Arizona
Medical Center is still on hiatus.

The Tucson hospital had announced in March that it would be reviving its lung
and heart-lung transplant programs. That’s when Dr. Jesus Gomez-Abraham was
hired to head the transplant programs.

A hospital spokeswoman tells the Arizona Daily Star
that officials in the surgery department want to reactivate the program once
another cardiothoracic surgeon is hired.

The lung transplant program has been on hiatus since Dr. Michael Moulton left
in early 2012 to join the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

UAMC is one of only two centers in Arizona that performs lung transplants. The
other is St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.
