Northern Arizona county to scale back snow plowing

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Coconino County is going to try save money by scaling
back its past aggressive strategy of plowing roads in unincorporated areas to
keep up with falling snow.

The Arizona Daily Sun reported the change to more
selective plowing. That means drivers who are used to squeaky clean winter roads will
find more snow on them this winter.

The county Board of Supervisors expected to save $500,000 of the $2 million
spent previously for plowing.

Officials said the county will clear many roads only starting as soon as there
is a plowable amount, not as soon as snow starts falling.

Past practice had the county deploying dozens of personnel during large-scale
storms, putting as many as 17 plows on the road.
